Here are the basic specs:

Mid-2012 Mac Pro 6-core 3.46GHz 32GB RAM Nvidia GTX680 4GB High Sierra or Mojave

My Mac Pro has been crashing on me continuously the past few weeks. It now shuts down unexpectedly within a few seconds to a few minutes or so after booting, and sometimes during boot! It doesn't happen in safe boot mode. I haven't been able to isolate what's causing it. It's been working perfectly for the past two years until now. I've attached the latest User Report (mostly Greek to me) and an EtreCheck report I just ran that seems useless. I've also run TechTool Pro a few times and it also found no hardware issues, all passed. Useless. I reset the SMC quite a few times after crashing which didn't seem to help, and I reset the PRAM as many times, also to no avail. Another user who recently posted this same problem (and I added a lot of this info there) seems to have not solved it either, in spite of some help from veteran Mac contributors.

Here's the most significant aspect as far as I can see: it does not shut down in safe mode when booting from any drive with any OS. I've been running for the past 36 hours or so without a crash in safe mode with High Sierra. I've reloaded some of the start-up items (which by the way I disabled for normal booting, and I have disabled extensions as well—no difference when booting normally. However, one thing that keeps happening in safe boot mode is the screen sometimes flashes when performing certain tasks, like writing in Word. Not sure if it's just because the Nvidia drivers aren't installed or what. I tried to install Mojave when in safe boot mode and it told me there wasn't a video card that would work. Booting normally allowed me to install it, although the Mac crashed 4-5 times during installation!

I have 3 PCIe cards running aside from the display card, but I have several times removed them and booted without them and it didn't make any difference. Booting from an internal SATA SSD or HDD made no difference. Essentially, I have booted with no unnecessary peripherals, no difference.

For the past two weeks I have been trying to solve this issue and isolate what is causing it, to no avail. I have booted from 4 different volumes, one SSD and one HDD running High Sierra, one SSD running Mojave, one SSD running Sierra. I even booted from an external drive running High Sierra. The result was the same every time. The volume running Sierra OS was a completely fresh install without migrating any user files or settings, and no apps. It worked well for a short time. And then it crashed, like always. I had hoped that perhaps the drivers for the Nvidia card in Sierra were older and would work, but if so it didn't make any difference. I also thought not having Adobe Creative Cloud manager installed might make a difference, but no. Like I said, it has been running without issue for two years, until High Sierra. I updated to Mojave hoping it might help but it didn't.

The first time it shut down on me was when I was loading a stack of RAW photos in Photoshop CC 2019. I've since tested it and it does it every time when booted normally, if it stays on long enough to even start the process; I haven't tried it in safe mode. So far, everything I see happening points to the Nvidia card that has been working perfectly until I updated to High Sierra, as far as I can tell that's when the problem began, although reverting to Sierra didn't help.

If it was the logic board I would think that it would crash in safe mode, same for the power supply. I've tried bypassing a UPS and plugging it directly in the wall, no difference. I've also changed the internal CR2032 battery with a brand new one. I have tried a brand-new Mac keyboard and a new mouse (back in the day I had a Performa that kept crashing due to a bad Mac keyboard).

So there you have it. Anyone have any idea what the issue could be? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Additional malware can only be installed with your permission, by supplying your Admin password, so your contact vigilance is required, and no package can substitute for that vigilance.

I agree and I uninstalled Avast last week so I don't know why it is showing up in EtreCheck if that's where you saw it.

Any other ideas about the problem, since it wasn't Avast that's causing it?

On an eight corer 12 core, the temperatures will show really high on the Northbridge if its heatsink is not attached properly.

SSD Drives do dynamic block allocation and use blocks differently. If you do not enable TRIM (a setting in each and every instance of MacOS you might be running on different drives) deleted data blocks accumulate rather than being freed, and your drive can become nearly full with deleted data and slow WAY down. MacOS reports used and free blocks as if your drive were a Rotating magnetic drive, so it does not detect the problem or warn you.

this terminal command:

Will change the setting in the instance of MacOS in which it executes, and will remain set in Normal mode and Safe mode. every block deleted AFTER the setting is changed will send a TRIM notification to the drive, and the blocks will be freed to be re-allocated and pre-erased for maximum performance and good wear-leveling.

In Regular mode Disk Utility Repair will clear the accumulated backlog and do a really big TRIM, freeing lots of blocks, EXCEPT on the Boot drive. Once the setting has been made, one pass through Safe Mode (which does a disk repair as it starts up AND honors the setting of trimforce) will clear the accumulated backlog and do a really big TRIM, freeing lots of blocks on the Boot drive.

In the User report you posted, the application that is crashing is:

/Applications/Utilities/Adobe Application Manager/*/UpdaterStartupUtility

so it seems like something to do with updating your adobe Apps is involved in this problem.

Thanks for all your info. Yes, I figured Adobe Application Manager was causing a problem which is why I wiped a drive and did a clean install of the OS, without any Adobe apps. I thought it was fixed, for about ten minutes and then it crashed again. I'm hoping replacing the video card might fix it, but I'm having my doubts. I just a little while ago I found an update for the Nvidia software and updated it. Again, I thought it was fixed because it didn't crash for 15-20 minutes, and then it did.

The crash you posted occurs in adobe software updater.

It looks like that App has a really awful memory management issue that causes a panic.

adobe forums are full of reports with this issue.

It is NOT your Mac hardware.

Thanks, I would love to believe that, and I have thought from the beginning Adobe software was part of the problem; I was using Photoshop when it crashed the first time. And I noticed that the User Report mentioned Adobe right at the beginning. The problem is, I created a fresh install of High Sierra without any third-party apps and it still crashed. It may be the the video card and the Nvidia driver cannot take the pressure from intensive apps like Photoshop, but sometimes it crashes before it even finishes booting normally. It always boots in safe mode. I'm replacing the Nvidia card on Monday with a Radeon and so I'll see if that changes anything. Right now the Mac Pro is booted in safe boot mode and it doesn't crash, which tells me it's not hardware-related, i.e., the logic board or the power supply. Safe mode turns off the Nvidia driver and that may have an effect that keeps it from crashing. It doesn't crash in safe mode and that has to be the key to this, somehow.
